16v 4age – Individual coil adapter plate

Adapter to hold individual coils (coilpacks / CoPs) to a 16V 4age engine. This billet machined aluminium adapter plate is a direct replacement for the steel plate originally fitted between cam covers. Converting to individual coils results in a neat, minimalist, reliable ignition system that gives a very strong spark.

Used in conjunction with the distributor blanking cover (see related products) only the base of the distributor remains.

 

Features / Advantages

Clean looks: Being CNC machined these plates are not only completely functional but also light and look great as well. With so many 16v engines out there is a good way to stand out. These are supplied unpainted and with a fine machined surface finish of the raw Aluminium.

Spark strength: On turbo and Supercharged engines a strong spark is critical and any compromise results in power loss and miss-fires. Closing the spark plug gap is an unnecessary compromise in power production. These type of coils are known to have a good spark even with 30PSI of boost!

Maintenance: In the original use the distributor cap and rotor buttons deteriorate with every use until they need their replacement. The ignition leads last long but still need to be replaced at intervals. Once individual coils are installed the only serviceable parts remain are the spark plugs them self. In the long term this alone may completely offset the initial conversion price.

 

Compatible coil types

This adapter bolts to the cam cover without any modifications and is directly compatible with both the coilpacks off the 1ZZ-FE and the NZ coils off both the 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE.

Both coil types work equally well so the choice of which type in packaging and personal preference of appearance. The suggested type for both form and function are the Bosch coils with the part number BIC729, this is what Toyota currently supply as the OEM replacement to suit the 1NZ / 2NZ engines and can be sourced through any Bosch parts reseller. Originally these engines used coils made by Denso with the transition being made between suppliers in recent years. Alternatively second hand coils if known to be genuine is usually quite a reliable option.

 

DOES NOT suit 4AGZE “Supercharged” cam covers. If you have these then this adapter plate can still be used however the cam covers off a normal 4age must be fitted first in the place of the originals. This difference / incompatibility is due to the difference in height of the mounting points for the original steel cover plate between the cam covers. On the 4AGZE cam covers these threaded mounting points are positioned lower and further inwards.

 

WARNING!

It’s highly suggested against using any coils bar those that are known to be genuine Toyota / Denso. Chinese ignition coils last approximately one month before complete failure. There are even some non-genuine coils for sale look like the real thing and even have the same Denso identification.
